The Haldon Grill
About This Spot
Nestled at the crest of Telegraph Hill just outside Exeter, The Haldon Grill unfolds like a beloved local hideaway — a classic roadside café where time slips into a gentler rhythm. From the moment you pull into its generous car park, the pace slows, and the familiar aroma of sizzling breakfast fills the air, grounded by the sight of simple wooden tables and the quiet hum of friendly chatter.
This is a place where the everyday acts of breaking bread and sharing a meal gain a feeling of warmth and ease. Whether it's the early morning crowd settling in over perfectly fried eggs or the steady mid-day trickle of regulars and travelers alike, the atmosphere carries an unpretentious charm. There's a subtle joy in watching the sun stretch wide across the surrounding trees as you enjoy a meal against the backdrop of wide open sky.
The menu echoes this sense of timeless comfort — hearty, uncomplicated dishes made with care and served without fuss. The charm isn’t in exotic twists but in the familiar done well: the satisfying heft of a full English, a generous plate of bubble and squeak that feels like an embrace on a chilly morning, or a quick, no-nonsense bacon sandwich that feels like an old friend. Portions are generous, the coffee is steady, and there’s a delight in simple moments like chatting with attentive staff who clearly know their regulars by name.
For those passing through, it’s a dependable stop that hints at local history as much as it does local flavor. The Haldon Grill is more than just a place to fill up; it’s a pause that resonates quietly — an invitation to slow down, savor familiar tastes, and share a moment under the broad sky of Devon’s hills.

This place is a great stop off on A380 on top of telegraph hill. Traditional road side café. Massive open plan carpark. Look for the teacup sign… The food is delicious and service is quick. The prices are very reasonable and it’s all good quality. You can also buy free range eggs there. Lots of seating. The place has some good history too.

Pretty good breakfast. Very quick to bring it out which was great. Fantastic fried eggs. Wasn’t a massive fan of the sausage but all round was pretty tasty.

Really friendly. A lovely spot for a stop off the main road to and from Exeter from the south. Surrounded by trees and a lovely big sky. Facilities are exactly as you’d expect of this old school road side cafe. Food is excellent and well proportioned, served quickly, hot, and without fuss. A wide menu offering something for everyone. A huge car park outside means you can pull in and out with a trailer no issue and can also park a motorbike within easy viewing of either the inside or outdoor eating areas.

Came here about 8 years ago for breakfast and it was amazing. Unfortunately not been able to get back since. On Monday was lucky enough to be passing the door so popped in. The breakfast is still amazing and you can have bubble and squeak! Staff are really friendly the service is fast. Prices are what you would expect for a cafe. The menu is not set in stone so you can take a meal and change things around if you would like. Overall will be going back especially now the wife knows about the place. If you are in the area stop off its well worth it.
